Skylon Tower

For the best views of Niagara Falls
nothing beats the Skylon Tower...

skylon tower The Skylon Tower is an observation deck with facilities that provides a spectacular overhead view of both the American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls at Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada. It is the iconic landmark in the city much the same way the CN Tower is for Toronto.

In fact, it actually is the precursor to the CN Tower as it looks like a smaller version and was actually built by the same company using the same special building technique later used at the CN Tower. It was opened on October 6, 1965 and has remained the City of Niagara Falls tallest structure ever since.

The tower is 520 feet (160 metres) tall and stands a full 775 feet (236 metres) from the bottom of the Falls. Outside elevators that look like “yellow bugs” whisk you to top in less than a minute.

skylon tower At the top you will find two restaurants: the Revolving Dining Room which revolves once every hour, and the Summit Suite Buffet. You can enjoy fine dining or a less formal experience while basking in the remarkable scenery below.

Restaurants aside, most people travel to the top of the tower to go to the observation deck for the panoramic and spectacular overhead views of The Falls and the skylines of Buffalo and Toronto.

The observation deck is glass enclosed and uses a special glare reducing glass that allows for good photographs to be taken through it and provides some shelter for bad weather and winter visits.

At the base of the tower there are gift and souvenir shops, fast food restaurants and a large arcade where an indoor amusement park used to sit. The area is newly renovated, as it was looking a little worn and tired. A new feature is a 4D motion theatre playing the movie “Legend of the Falls” which gives thrill seekers the opportunity to experience the formation and history of the Falls. A newly constructed bridge now links the Tower to Fallsview Casino allowing indoor access at all times of the year.

Insider Tip: Ride to the top is free if dining, Dining is expensive though but view is fantastic. Try to visit on a Friday night from early June until October when fireworks are set off at dusk as the tower provides an excellent viewing area.

I love the view of The Falls from the top observation deck of the Skylon Tower. I would highly recommend for any visitor to Niagara Falls to at least pay the fee for the trip to the top to get a few photos that you will admire for years. It is a little expensive but this may be a once in a lifetime visit and there are few other spots that allow for such a magnificent view of this spectacular creation. The restaurants may also be a little pricey but the setting and scenery are unbeatable.

If you just want a quick trip to the top to enjoy the view reserve at most 30 minutes for your visit to the Skylon Tower. Even if you participate in a few activities plan on spending no more than 2 hours maximum at this attraction.
