The Maid of the Mist is a boating adventure like no other! Hop on board one of these sightseeing boats and be prepared for an experience you will never forget. The boat takes you up close and personal to one of natures most beautiful creations, the Niagara Falls.
Named after a mythical aboriginal character this cruise experience has been in almost continuous operation since its inception in 1846. Originally operated as a ferry across the Niagara River that business was very short lived with the opening of the first bridge across the river in 1848. With its conversion to a sightseeing journey the Maid flourished until the onset of the American Civil War at which time financial difficulties forced it to close. After re-starting in 1885 a new company scheduled trips closer to The Falls than ever before and the operation has run successfully ever since.
Today the company operates boats that disembark from both sides of the border and each ship can carry up to 600 passengers at a time. Check their official site at www.maidofthemist.com for current prices and schedules. Due to ice conditions that form on the Niagara River the service only operates for part of the year, during the busy summer holiday months.
This is one of the main attractions in Niagara Falls so during the summer weekends you should expect long lineups sometimes up to 2- 3 hours. This is however a premier experience that Im sure you wont regret waiting for. There is nothing quite so exhilarating as putting on a raincoat, hopping on board then literally getting up close and personal with one of the natural wonders of the world. You will most likely get wet as the spray and mist from The Falls soaks everything as the water crashes to the rocks with a thunderous roar.
